Hemodynamix, a spin-off project from Justus Liebig University Giessen rooted in CPI’s cardiopulmonary research, has won first place at the Hessen Ideen Competition 2026. At the final in Frankfurt, the team prevailed against eleven finalist teams from universities across Hesse.
This is what the team says about their success:
"Every day, hospitals record cardiac pressure waveforms during routine procedures, yet most of the physiological information these signals contain remains unused. Assessing heart function in more depth usually requires specialized catheters that are costly, complex and rarely available. Hemodynamix develops algorithms and software that extract meaningful hemodynamic insights, such as pressure–volume loop analysis, from routinely recorded pressure data, with no additional catheters, hardware or clinical workload. This could help patients with heart and lung diseases such as pulmonary hypertension by enabling earlier assessment of disease severity and risk.
The approach has been published in the Journal of Heart and Lung Transplantation, and the team’s Online Single-Beat Analyzer is freely available to researchers at hemodynamix.de. A real-time bedside system that reads signals directly from standard monitoring equipment has also been developed and is being used in clinical studies.
The team, comprised of CPI researchers Prof. Khodr Tello and Dr. Nils Kremer as well as Felix Glocker, thanks the CPI, JLU, DZL, SFB 1213 and DFG for their long-standing support, as well as Prof. Werner Seeger, Prof. Friedrich Grimminger and Prof. Ardeschir Ghofrani. The next step is founding a company and moving from a validated research prototype toward everyday clinical use.
Hemodynamix is a research and development project; the software is not a certified medical device."
We proudly congratulate the team behind hemodynamix and wish them every success for their future endeavors!
