CPI: Cardio-Pulmonary Institute - Research for a Healthier Future of the Heart and Lungs

Heart and lung diseases are among the most common causes of death worldwide. An aging population and new risk factors such as environmental pollutants or infections render their treatment increasingly complex. The Cardio-Pulmonary Institute (CPI) – a research consortium of the Universities of Giessen and Frankfurt, as well as the Max Planck Institute for Heart and Lung Research – aims to explore innovative paths in medicine with a team of over 200 scientists. The team is led by two spokespersons: Stefanie Dimmeler (GU) and Susanne Herold (JLU), supported by Thomas Braun (MPI-HLR) on the Board of Directors.

True to the motto "Precision Biology Drives Precision Medicine," the CPI investigates how the heart and the lungs function, age, and acquire diseases – and how these diseases can be treated at high precision and in a personalized way. The CPI adopts an integrative approach: scientists from various biomedical and clinical disciplines collaborate on the development of new therapies tailored to individual patients. Innovative data analyses, clinical studies, and digital methods help to quickly translate research findings into medical practice

With targeted support for young researchers, a strong focus on equal opportunities, and effective science communication, the CPI aims to contribute to the long-term improvement of heart and lung health – for a medicine that better serves people at all ages.

The cluster was initially funded from 2006 to 2018 as Excellence Cluster “Cardio-Pulmonary System" and successfully re-established in 2019 as the “Cardio-Pulmonary Institute”.
