CPI Clinician Scientist Christina Malainou has been awarded this year’s Research Award for Experimental Pneumology by the German Respiratory Society (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Pneumologie und Beatmungsmedizin, DGP). The award is endowed with €10,000.
Dr. Malainou was recognized for her experimental research investigating the underlying immune mechanisms responsible for dangerous secondary infections following severe influenza. Her work provides important new insights into why patients may become particularly vulnerable to further infections after a serious flu illness.
By helping to better understand these complex immunological processes, her research contributes to the development of improved prevention and treatment strategies for patients at risk of severe respiratory complications
