SUMMARY:Think statistics! with R | Online Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The main aim of this course is to teach how to approach data analysis problems with classical statistics. We focus on the intuition behind statistical methodologies rather than on "how to run a t-test with R"\n(which we will also learn\, by the way). \n  \nTopics: \n- Sampling theory: obtaining information about a population via sampling. Sample characteristics (location\, dispersion\, skewness)\, estimation of the mean\, standard error of the mean. \n- Probability theory: \n-- Discrete distributions: Discrete Uniform\, Bernoulli\, Binomial\, Poisson\, Negative Binomial. \n-- Continuous distributions: From the Discrete to the Continuous Uniform. Exponential and Gamma as waiting time distributions in Poisson processes. \n-- Central limit theorem: The Normal distribution\, chi-square distribution. Distribution of the sample mean. Standard error of the mean. \n- Hypothesis testing. Confidence interval of the sample mean\, "Student"'s t-distribution. One-group and two-group t-tests. \n- Type I and Type II errors. P-value distributions (why the magnitude of the p-value doesn't matter). Power calculations for the t-test. \n- "Cookbook of tests": \n-- Distribution tests: Shapiro-Wilk\, Kolmogorov-Smirnov. \n-- Tests of location: Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney test. Parametric and non-parametric tests. \n-- Tests of disperson: F-test. \n-- Counting statistics: chi-square test for contingency tables and goodness-of-fit. Fisher's exact test. \n-- Correlations: Pearson\, Kendall's tau\, Spearman's rank correlation test. \n  \nOut of scope: \nWe are **not** going to analyse participants' data\, with one exception: \nthey can bring a small dataset of their own with two groups and can try out a t-test and a power calculation on it. Most exercises use synthetic data for pedagogical purposes. \n  \nPre-requisites: \n- Basic familiarity with the R programming language is **required**. \n- Familiarity with Jupyter notebooks and the Jupyter system (https://jupyter.org) is advantageous\, but not required (the basics will be explained in advance). \n  \nHands-on exercises: \nThese are short pieces of R code that the participants run during the lecture. Most of them are simulations that illustrate sampling errors\, p-value variability etc. The exercises run on a server provided by the instructor. \n  \n"Homework" exercises: \nThese are simple tasks that the participants can complete after the lectures on their own and the system tells them whether the solutions were correct. The exercises run on yet another server provided by the instructor. \n  \nTime: 2 x 4 hours\, with 2 short breaks. \n  \nHandouts: \nProvided after the course. The participants get PDF copies of the lecture slides (not to be distributed) and some other "goodies" (scripts etc.)

SUMMARY:Time and Career Management | Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Description\n\n\n\n\nEvery week has 7 days\, 168 hours or 10080 minutes… a lot of time to do a lot of things! Still\, many of us suffer from the feeling of always having too little of it. You might not think about how you want to spend it and how to distribute it between your career\, family\, friends and hobbies. These are also no easy questions with answers to be found in a textbook – the ‘ideal schedule’ is simply too different from one person to the other.\nDuring this online workshop\, we will analyse the individual schedules of the week and pro-vide tools and ideas to make the best use of your time investment. Furthermore\, we will discuss how to balance science and life in different contexts and plan your days in a flexible work environment.\nThe aim is not only to work more efficiently and reduce personal stress\, but also to be more satisfied and successful in your career and personal life. \n  \nIn this course you´ll learn about: \n  \n\nThe basic principles of time-management\nWhat do I want to achieve this year professionally and personally?\nYour 168 hours: How much do you actually work? How much of this is towards your goals?\nFor what to spend time?\nHow to (not) schedule your calendar?\nE-mails\, meetings and phone calls\nScience-life balance\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAll participants receive a script of the course in PDF format for offline and future use so that they can work through the material offline as well as after the course. \n\n\n\nCourse Flow Online Workshop\n\n\n\n\nDay 1\nLive Webinar (28.02.2024) \n\nCourse introduction\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n2-3 Weeks\nThe participants work individually through the materials (eBooks\, podcasts\, movies\, example posters) and assignments. \nThe instructor provides regular feedback. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWeek 3\nClosing live Webinar (06.03.2024) \n\nWrap-up\nFeedback

SUMMARY:Conflict Management | In House Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Description\n\n\n\n\nConflicts are the moment of truth of any (working) relationship: scarce goods are redistributed\, interests are clarified\, and people can act as good colleagues or egomaniac tinpot dictators. When setting up our environment so that problems can come to the surface without leading to toxic conflicts\, you’re on a good track to establishing healthy working environments. What if the conflict breaks out nonetheless? In this workshop\, we’ll also learn to resolve conflicts using negotiation and mediation techniques\, which we’ll train using real-life examples from the participants. And if that fails? For these cases\, you need to know how to escalate in a professional way.\nThe techniques we discuss in this workshop are helpful both in leader and team member roles. \n  \nIn this course you´ll learn about: \n  \nOpen communication culture\n\nHow can a group of heterogeneous individuals communicate without excluding anyone?\nConducting one-on-ones\nToxic language: hidden pitfalls in our daily communication\n\n  \nNegotiation for conflict resolution\n\nThe Harvard Negotiation Principles: from salary negotiation to conflict cases\nParticipants’ cases analysed\nGetting the buy-in from the other side to form a lasting agreement\nTactics vs. open cards: when to choose which route?\n\n  \nMediation\n\nDefine your role as a conflict party\, team leader\, or mediator\nMediation structure\nPractice using case studies\n\n  \nTuning the ‘temperature’\n\nDeescalation: how to cool off the situation to prevent damage and to prepare for a constructive discussion\nEscalation: if nothing else helps\, this is the step that has to be done with the highest level of professionality

SUMMARY:Introduction to quality management systems (QMS)
DESCRIPTION:Description\n\n\n\n\nIn many companies\, quality management knowledge is expected of graduates from the life sciences\, but is rarely taught at universities. For this reason\, this course offers an introduction to the various quality management systems (QMS) and industry-associated processes. The aim is to understand job advertisements’ requirements and keywords and better assess possible future professional fields. \nGood Laboratory Practice (GLP)\nThis is a quality management system that is used in certified laboratories. It is necessary\, among other things\, for the analysis of drugs in the development stage (animal (in vivo) and cell (in vitro) studies)\, but also for environmental safety tests. In this part of the course\, the 10 basic principles such as the requirements for personnel\, apparatus and measurement results are explained. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGood Clinical Practice (GCP)\nThis encompasses the ethical and scientific quality requirements for conducting clinical trials on humans. GCP is relevant for pharmaceutical companies and the contract research laboratories and clinics involved. After an overview of the different drug testing and approval phases\, the guideline’s most essential terms and content are explained. \nGood Manufacturing Practice (GMP)\nThis includes guidelines for quality assurance in the production of pharmaceuticals\, cosmetics\, food and feed. Among other things\, it regulates standard operation procedures\, documentation requirements\, the management of deviations and changes in the process\, the qualification of systems and the validation of methods. \n\nThe workshop consists of 3 webinars\, 25\, 26 and 28 September (9:00-10:30)!

SUMMARY:Film your science
DESCRIPTION:Description\n\n\n\n\nDo you want to learn to communicate your science visually without spending excessive time or money? In this workshop\, you’ll learn to make appealing short films about your research with equipment as simple as your smartphone.\nWe will teach you everything necessary to make good and useful footage for your own video in half a day to two days. We will practice composition\, camera movements and a large diversity of shots online or in person. \nYou will get to work on your own science film\, a take-home resource you can use directly for your science communication and self-marketing. We guide you through the production process with two primary assignments of growing complexity\, which will refine your film step by step. You will practice using your smartphone as a videocamera\, and we will discuss the results. We will pay special attention to the sound because any presentation or interview will be worthless if the sound is weak. In the more extended versions of the course\, we will also pay attention to interviewing\, presenting\, and the basics of editing. \n\n\n\n\n\nThere will be only 2 webinars: 31 August\, 9:00-12:00 and 7 September\, 9:00-12:00!!!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPractical remarks\n\n\n\n\nParticipants can use their smartphones for the recording; you need no special equipment. A big plus would be to buy an external 25 € microphone. SUMMARY:Metabolomics Mass Spectrometry
DESCRIPTION:A targeted workflow to quantify Oxylipins or Amino Acids via LC-MS/MS\nThis course consists of a theoretical and practical session. \nDuring the theoretical part you will learn how a mass spectrometer works\, in particular we will explain the principle of a targeted instrument. Further\, the biology of oxylipins OR amino acids (including secondary amines) and their role in cardiovascular diseases will be outlined\, and their extraction protocol will be discussed. In the practical part\, oxylipins OR amino acids will be extracted from a mouse organ OR plasma and prepared for mass spectrometric analyses on one of our targeted instruments. The results will be analyzed with Sciex OS\, Skyline or MassHunter\, and statistically evaluated with MetaboAnalyst. It is recommended to get familiar with MetaboAnalyst and Skyline before the course. \nOverall\, this course aims to show you a standardized workflow in Metabolomics Mass Spectrometry. \nWorkshop times: \nDay 1: 10:00 - 17:00\nDay 2 10:00 - 14:00
