SUMMARY:How to Be More Employable in Industry | Online Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Most of us who complete a PhD in a science discipline will end up working outside of academia. Are you wondering what working in the private sector is really like? How do you find these jobs? Do you feel confident that you can impress an industry hiring manager when you describe the very specialized research project you just spent years pursuing? And what kinds of jobs can a scientist get in a company anyway? This workshop helps you with these questions and many more about the exciting world that awaits scientists in the private sector! \n  \nIn this course you´ll learn about: \nHow is industry different than academia?\n\nAddressing the cultural differences\nWhat will my main challenges be in that job?\n\nCan a scientist build a rewarding career in industry?\n\nCareer options for scientists in industry\nWill I enjoy working in industry?\n\nHow to design your own career path in the private sector\n\nWhat strengths make me valuable in industry?\nWhat’s the best way to find a job?\n\nImpressing an industry manager\n\nHow can I describe my PhD work so they see my value?\nHow can I sound more industry savvy in an interview?\n\nIndustry topics not taught in STEM\n\nHow are projects run in industry?\nFinance – The language of business\nWorking with customers\n\nOvercoming the job search challenges\n\nI was perfect for that job! Why didn’t I hear back?\nHow do I answer those tricky interview questions?\nCan a shy person network effectively?

SUMMARY:Think statistics! with R | Online Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The main aim of this course is to teach how to approach data analysis problems with classical statistics. We focus on the intuition behind statistical methodologies rather than on "how to run a t-test with R"\n(which we will also learn\, by the way). \n  \nTopics: \n- Sampling theory: obtaining information about a population via sampling. Sample characteristics (location\, dispersion\, skewness)\, estimation of the mean\, standard error of the mean. \n- Probability theory: \n-- Discrete distributions: Discrete Uniform\, Bernoulli\, Binomial\, Poisson\, Negative Binomial. \n-- Continuous distributions: From the Discrete to the Continuous Uniform. Exponential and Gamma as waiting time distributions in Poisson processes. \n-- Central limit theorem: The Normal distribution\, chi-square distribution. Distribution of the sample mean. Standard error of the mean. \n- Hypothesis testing. Confidence interval of the sample mean\, "Student"'s t-distribution. One-group and two-group t-tests. \n- Type I and Type II errors. P-value distributions (why the magnitude of the p-value doesn't matter). Power calculations for the t-test. \n- "Cookbook of tests": \n-- Distribution tests: Shapiro-Wilk\, Kolmogorov-Smirnov. \n-- Tests of location: Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney test. Parametric and non-parametric tests. \n-- Tests of disperson: F-test. \n-- Counting statistics: chi-square test for contingency tables and goodness-of-fit. Fisher's exact test. \n-- Correlations: Pearson\, Kendall's tau\, Spearman's rank correlation test. \n  \nOut of scope: \nWe are **not** going to analyse participants' data\, with one exception: \nthey can bring a small dataset of their own with two groups and can try out a t-test and a power calculation on it. Most exercises use synthetic data for pedagogical purposes. \n  \nPre-requisites: \n- Basic familiarity with the R programming language is **required**. \n- Familiarity with Jupyter notebooks and the Jupyter system (https://jupyter.org) is advantageous\, but not required (the basics will be explained in advance). \n  \nHands-on exercises: \nThese are short pieces of R code that the participants run during the lecture. Most of them are simulations that illustrate sampling errors\, p-value variability etc. The exercises run on a server provided by the instructor. \n  \n"Homework" exercises: \nThese are simple tasks that the participants can complete after the lectures on their own and the system tells them whether the solutions were correct. The exercises run on yet another server provided by the instructor. \n  \nTime: 2 x 4 hours\, with 2 short breaks. \n  \nHandouts: \nProvided after the course. The participants get PDF copies of the lecture slides (not to be distributed) and some other "goodies" (scripts etc.)

SUMMARY:Overcoming decisions paralysis | Online Talk
DESCRIPTION:In today’s academic environment\, researchers face an overwhelming number of choices—ranging \nfrom career paths and collaborations to projects and priorities. While having options is often seen as a \nprivilege\, the sheer volume of choices can lead to decision paralysis. This webinar explores the roots \nof decision paralysis\, how it manifests (often disguised as procrastination)\, and offers practical tools \nto break free from its grip. In this webinar we will: \n- Understand what decision paralysis is and how it differs from simple indecision \n- Explore the underlying causes: fear of regret\, perfectionism\, paradox of choice\, etc. \n- Learn practical tools to build decision-making confidence and take purposeful action.

SUMMARY:Academia & Parenting – Managing the mental load | Online Talk
DESCRIPTION:How do we juggle work- life balance when “life” comes with such a huge mental load? When the \nfamily to-do list is three times as long as the work to-do list and you feel like you are always the one \nthat has to remember. How do we thrive at work whilst navigating the worry and guilt of managing a \nfamily at home? How do we learn to share the planning and management of our homes and not just \nthe delegation of a never-ending task list in our minds? It is possible. In this session\, we will: \n- Explore what mental load is and how it manifests in our daily lives. \n- Learn to recognise signs of burnout and tools we can employ to avoid it. \n- Learn to take meaningful breaks. \n- Learn to be more effective at work so you can enjoy your time at home. \n- Identify worry and self-doubt loops and how to stop them. \n- Explore mindfulness and self-compassion as tools to help you be present with our kids when we \nare at home and present with our works when we need to be working.
